With reference to my despatch "o. 368 I
have the honour to state that at an interview
with Prince Ch'ing yesterday I pressed for an
answer to my two last notes of A gust 13th and
September 5th on the subject of the "hampoa
Railway project.
His Highness said that the scheme to
construct a railway from Canton to "hampoa
originated many years ago, before the Canton-
Kowloon preliminary agreement was concluded,
and was thought of in consequence of the plagus
epidemic in the nineties.
